What we would want to know
We would want to know how many people in the world are infected by COVID-19. This however is not known because not everyone is tested. Two important reasons that testing is low, is that in some places not enough tests are available and some people who are infected with COVID-19 have mild symptoms and therefore do not go to get checked.
What we know is therefore only the number of confirmed cases and the number of suspected cases.
What we do know
The table and the chart show the number of confirmed cases. As explained above, the number of confirmed cases is lower than the number of total cases, which is unknown.
The visualization here shows the number of total confirmed cases and the number of daily cases – the table shows key data points, the charts show the change over time.
This is the data published by the World Health Organization (WHO) in their daily Situation Reports here.
On the left we see the total number of confirmed cases.
On the right the daily number of new confirmed cases. It is important to not only study the total, but the daily case counts as well.
